Gas prices have been an issue for far too long now. In fact, for so long that President Bush has lifted an administrative order that bans offshore oil drilling. The only reason the administrative would have to do such a thing is to supposedly ease American minds that there is no recession, no problem, and definitely no petroleum issues regarding foreign affairs. Also, Alaskan drilling has been considered. So why the change? Well, Busch seems to be panicking—he wants to help but not seem like a flip-flopper in his petroleum and Iraqi ideals.
However, there are many problems with this. The first of which is quantity and time ranges. Any oil drilling, offshore or Alaskan, will not benefit the country in immediate years. In fact, Alaskan drilling has estimated almost ten years until America even sees the oil. The offshore drilling will only show its oil in five years; time is one issue, quantity is another. According to the CNN article at , eighteen billion oil barrels worth of oil is “possibly” waiting offshore and only ten in Alaska. This sounds like a lot, but is nowhere near it. Ten billion barrels of oil has been understood by environmentalists to only fulfill three hundred days of America’s petroleum requirements. Not even a year’s worth of oil for all this trouble, expense, environmental concerns, and the delayed oil itself. So how much will eighteen billion barrels help? About a year and a half? Is this really worth it?
The second issue is that it’s too little too late; the deficit of “this” energy leads to look into the “other” energy suppliers—wind, solar, etc. Presidential candidate Barack Obama also believes in keeping the ban in place so not to distract us from renewable sources of energy.

We now have a crisis of Global proportions. A crisis that does not only deal in oil but also encompasses world hunger, massive human rights violations, renegade factions imposing their religious and cultural beliefs on the rest of the world and, let us not forget the Global warming crisis. I, being American, am not removing my country from this list of worrisome trends. My country, in most ways, is the biggest offender.
Leaders, such as The United States, the Sudanese, North Vietnam, China, Russia, Iran and, scores of others all have one thing in common: A leader who has been elected, or has assumed the role of leader, not because he/she was most qualified for that position or had the most money but rather because they were more confident in their abilities to run (or in some cases seize)those offices. We handed their power to them, they are one, we are many and yet we allow them to destroy our planet, oppress us, drive around in expensive vehicles, eating their gourmet food while we fight to remain alive.
There is an invisible barrier that must be torn down or leaders like George W. will continue to rape and pillage not only the planet but those peasants who handed him his power. That barrier is called confidence. If the people are confident in themselves then their leaders will only no choice other than to listen to those whom they ”govern.”
One closing remark. The United States can launch a soccer ball sized satellite into space and have it smash into a meteorite. Have another leave our planet, travel to a comet that is speeding through space, take a sample of its tail and, then return to earth with that sample. Or launch a tractor to Mars and have it working out soil samples in its on-board laboratory. But we are all convinced that the only answer to our energy crisis is off shore drilling? Come on people WAKE UP. We have the technology to do all that above, but to not develop alternative energy sources? I guess our leaders are maybe smarter than us. You say that money is an issue? What about the United States bailing out the mortgage giants this past weekend. Anyone seen that price tag yet? I, for one, am sick and tired off all this whining and think that it is time for all (White, Black, Red, Yellow, Christian, Hebrew, Muslim and, all in between and around) to unite and stand up to those we let control our lives. Anarchy will get their attention.
I know that those leaders would only be replaced with others like it, or so you are thinking. But not if they see what happened to those we booted out of office.
